Garbha sanskar is a Sanskrit term, which literally means 'education in the womb'. It is traditionally believed that a child's mental and behavioural development starts as soon as he is conceived. His personality begins to take shape in the womb, and this can be influenced by the mother's state of mind during pregnancy. This knowledge can be traced back to ancient scriptures and is included in the Ayurveda. According to Garbha sanskar, your baby is able to sense and respond to outside influences like music and other sounds as well as your thoughts and feelings. That is why well-meaning elders in the family, talk about the importance of staying positive and relaxed during pregnancy. How does Garbha sanskar work? To help a mother remain in the best possible frame of mind in the interest of her growing baby, Garbha sanskar suggests a set of practices and way of life. This includes reading or seeing things that make you happy, communicating with your baby, performing spiritual activities like pujas, meditating and eating healthily. You may have seen a pregnant mother caressing or talking to her baby bump and perhaps even found it strange. She may well be practising Garbha sanskar. Can my emotions and thoughts really influence my unborn baby? There has been recent scientific interest on the subject, and some evidence suggests that a baby's brain develops up to 60 per cent while in the womb. It is also becoming more and more apparent that an unborn baby is able to respond to outside influences such as sound, light and movement. Opinions, however, differ on whether you should actively try to stimulate your baby's development or not and how that would work. Traditionally, staying happy and doing things that keep you peaceful and fulfilled were believed to influence your unborn baby in a positive way. So if, for example, you watch a funny movie while pregnant, and it makes you happy and cheerful, it is believed that some of that positive emotion passes on to your baby. Such positive experiences are believed to help shape your baby's earliest impressions in a constructive manner, hopefully making him a well-balanced and happy person. Whether or not this is scientifically true, it will definitely be a step towards a happier and fulfilled you. You will have already created a beautiful bond with your unborn baby, as well as a wonderful environment for your baby to be born in. Do other cultures share similar views as Garbha sanskar? There are other cultures that share the concept of 'education in the womb' that underlines Garbha sanskar. In Korea for example, it is very popular. In many western cultures as well, certain types of music such as Mozart, is believed to have a positive effect on the unborn child. Different cultures around the world also encourage nurturing the bond between the mothers and growing baby just like in Garbha sanskar. So around the world expectant mothers and fathers as well speak to the mother's baby bump. Shastra Chikitsa (Surgical Management): ?????????? ?????? ??????: ????????? ????? ?????? ??????????????? ??????????????? ??????????? -By (Su. Chi. 7/29) As per Ayurveda, ?Shasra-Chikitsa? (Surgical Treatment) is carried out only for the diseases, which cannot be cured by medicines and only surgery remain the last option to save the patient?s life. Shalya tantra (Department of Ayurvedic Surgery), an Ayurvedic surgical branch, that deals with the methods of removal of different kinds of foreign objects, such as grass, wood, stone, sand, metal, bone, hair and nail; pus, exudation, vitiated ulcer, use of caustic alkalis (ksara) and cautery (agni) and even diagnosis of ulcers/wounds. The pre-operative procedures (purva-karma), surgical procedures (excision, incision, scrapping, puncturing, probing, extracting, draining, suturing etc.), post-operative procedures (paschat-karma), marma?s description (description about the vital points of the body), anesthesia (sangya-harana), the description of the types of bandages (patta bandhana), shastras (sharp instruments), yantras (blunt instruments), leech therapy (jalokavacharana), sira-vyadha (blood-letting) and treatment of diseases that need surgical care have been described in this branch. In the ancient India, surgery was principally pioneered by Ayurveda. The name of the sage-physician, Susruta, is synonymous with surgery. From his treatise ?Susruta Samhita?, we gained knowledge of sophisticated methods of surgery that were practiced in India. Topics of intestinal obstructions, bladder stones, and the use of dead bodies for dissection and learning were taught and practiced in ancient India. The original text of Susruta has a detailed discussion of the exhaustive range of surgical methods, which is inclusive of methods on how to deal with various types of tumors, internal and external injuries, fracture of bones, complications during pregnancy and delivery and obstruction in intestinal loop. Susruta was the first surgeon to develop cosmetic surgery in Ayurveda. His surgical treatment for trichiasis can be reckoned with some of the modern operative techniques used for this eye disease. The sage-physician, Charaka, School of Ayurveda Medicines, recommended Shastra Chikitsa (Surgical Treatment) for the treatment of certain diseases, such as Arsh (hemorrhoids), Gulma (abdominal lump), Shotha (swelling) etc. According to Ayurveda, Shalya Chikitsa (Surgical Management) is best suited, when the problem is beyond just medicinal repair. In cases such as, Arbuda (abscesses, cysts), Gandamala (enlarged lymph nodes), Arsh (hemorrhoids), Bhagandara (Fistula-in-ano), Gud-bransh (prolapse rectum), Ashmari (Renal stone/ Vesical calculas), Mutravaodh (retention of urine) and stana-rog (breast diseases), Shalya-Chikitsa (Surgical Management) is the last protocol.
